The new Intel Nehalem and Lynnfield processors.
By nibbler
Intel has finally released its new range of processors. These chips represent the next generation of processor for gamers and users alike, but are the processors an improvement on the original core-i7 range?
What are the new processors?
There are three new processors available;
Core i7-870.
- Lithography Process: 45 nm
- Cores: 4
- Threads: 8
- Frequency: 2.93 GHz
- Multiplier: 22
- Cache: 256 KB L2/core and 8 MB shared L3
- Memory Controller: Dual channel DDR3 800/1066/1333 MHz
- TDP: 95W
- Socket: LGA1166
The premium CPU of the range, this processor runs at a stock speed of 2.93GHz. Prices in the UK start from £400.00. Definitely a CPU for the hardcore gamer at that price.
Core i7-860.
- Lithography Process: 45 nm
- Cores: 4
- Threads: 8
- Frequency: 2.80 GHz
- Multiplier: 21
- Cache: 256 KB L2/core and 8 MB shared L3
- Memory Controller: Dual channel DDR3 800/1066/1333 MHz
- TDP: 95W
- Socket: LGA1166
Calling this CPU a “mid range” processor is a little unkind, as its performance is truly superb. This chip has been designed for those that want power on a slightly more sensible budget. Prices start from £220.00
Core i5-750
- Lithography Process: 45 nm
- Cores: 4
- Threads: 4
- Frequency: 2.66 GHz
- Multiplier: 20
- Cache: 256 KB L2/core and 8 MB shared L3
- Memory Controller: Dual channel DDR3 800/1066/1333 MHz
- TDP: 95W
- Socket: LGA1156
A processor created for budget/entry levels pc’s. Still offers good performance at 2.66GHz. Prices start from £150.00
New feature. Turbo Boost.
Intel has incorporated a new technology into its range of processors called “Turbo Boost”. This clever technology automatically allows each core to run faster according to the demands placed on it. If an application is using 3 cores then turbo boost will automatically optimise them to run at maximum efficiency while turning off the cores that are not in use. The following speeds can be reached when the turbo boost function is in use;
- i7-870. Up to 3.6 GHz
- i7-860. Up to 3.46 GHz
- i5-750. Up to 3.2 GHz
Conslusion.
This new range of processors is a welcome improvement to what was already a strong lineup. Our IT Support London based company has been testing the new chips alongside some of the existing Intel processors and the results have been impressive, with the new Core i7-870 outperforming both the i7-920 and Extreme QX9770 in most PCMark and Sandra tests that were run against both chips.
The Core i5 is also a very shrewd move from Intel. It may lack the hyper threading of its big brothers but for the price, performance is exceptional.
To conclude, these processors make the perfect partner for the Intel P55 chipset.
New CPU launch.
